FAQs

E&M Heating, Plumbing & Air Conditioning

  • What is the SEER rating?

The seasonal energy efficiency ratio (SEER) measures the efficiency of heating and cooling equipment. It calculates the cooling output per dollar of electricity consumed, compared to other systems. For instance, a 3-ton unit might have a SEER rating of 13, 14, or 15. Higher SEER ratings indicate greater efficiency. SEER ratings for units typically range from 13 to 21.
  • Why is the SEER rating on the Energy Guide different than what my dealer quoted?

Each split system cooling unit has a nominal SEER rating, which can be increased by upgrading the indoor unit within the same series. The overall SEER rating of a system depends on the combination of equipment installed in your home. Both the outdoor equipment (heat pump or air conditioner) and indoor equipment (evaporator coil and furnace, or air handler) significantly impact the total rating.
  • Why should I have regular (or preventive) maintenance? And how often should I have it performed?

Regular maintenance is crucial for maximizing the lifespan of your heating and cooling systems and preventing common equipment failures. These systems work continuously, and the constant operation can cause wear and tear. Preventive maintenance inspections can identify issues such as leaks, rust, rot, soot, frayed wires, and corroded electrical contacts. It's advisable to have maintenance performed regularly to ensure optimal efficiency and avoid potential future problems.
  • What equipment requires regular (or preventive) maintenance?

Heat pumps and air conditioners should receive professional tune-ups twice yearly, in spring and fall. Inspections for boiler and furnace systems should cover ductwork, pipes, dampers, valves, chimney, registers, radiators, pumps, blowers, fuel lines, oil tank, and all components of the furnace and boiler. For heat pump and air conditioning units, inspections should also include the fan, compressor, indoor and outdoor coils, and refrigerant lines.

If we encounter a situation requiring additional factory assistance, we'll contact our factory-supported service managers for support.
  • What are the advantages of a programmable thermostat?

Programmable thermostats offer greater accuracy and efficiency than mercury-containing thermostats due to their electronic nature. They allow you to control your home's temperature at different times of day automatically, without manual adjustments. This automation ensures you never forget to change the setting, providing consistent comfort and energy efficiency.
  • What type of filter should I use? And how often should I replace it?

While standard filters maintain system and ductwork cleanliness, they don't significantly improve indoor air quality. For enhanced air quality, consider a media air cleaner. These filters, positioned between the main return duct and blower cabinet, can improve dust and particle removal up to seven times more than standard filters. Pleated media filters can remove a wide range of particles, including airborne viruses. Choose a filter that matches your blower's capacity. For optimal performance, replace disposable filters monthly or clean washable filters monthly.
  • Why can't I find the correct size furnace filter at my local home improvement store for my Trane Brand Equipment?

Trane filters are manufactured using higher-quality materials compared to disposable filters found in retail stores. As a result, replacement Trane filters are exclusively available through authorized Trane dealers. It's worth noting that some Trane filters are reusable and can be hand-washed in cold water.
  • Where can I get parts for my Trane equipment?

As an authorized Trane dealer, E&M Heating, Plumbing & Air Conditioning is the most reliable source for identifying and supplying the correct, up-to-date parts for your system. We can also provide information on pricing and availability of Trane parts.
  • What does my warranty cover?

The standard factory warranty from Trane covers parts that fail due to defects during the warranty period. Labor is not included in this coverage. Your warranty certificate, which contains specific information about model numbers, serial numbers, and installation dates, was provided in your homeowner information packet. E&M Heating, Plumbing & Air Conditioning registers all Trane equipment we install to ensure your 10-year parts warranty. If you can't locate your warranty certificate, we can provide that information. With our Total Comfort Plan, you'll receive a ten-year parts and labor warranty on your Trane equipment.
